Di Nagara Deungeun

from The Best of the Indonesian Sessions by Colin Bass

/

about

From the album: 'So La Li'. This song is in the Sundanese (West Java) language, from a traditional poem. As often in Sundanese poetry it deals with homesickness. The title translates as 'In a Foreign Country'. The song translates as:
Don't be annoyed when treated unkindly. Don't be anxious when no-one visits you. Reconcile yourself to it, resign yourself, for you are living in a foreign country. Suddenly there is brightness in the dark; it is like the morning star. Mount Puyuh forms the southern border. Mount Salak forms the eastern border. Mount Pangrango is in the centre. Mount Galungan lies behind us. Whose boat is that along the coast. Rapidly the wind blows it out to sea, farther and farther. Its pennant is waving, it waves as though it were sad.
- thanks to Prof. Wim van Zanten for the translation.
